Description | The presentation focused on examining whether an Edo period bestseller, Nise Murasaki inaka Genji, that was often labeled as parody, really bears the necessary signs of parody, considering various theories of parody. After introducing the Japanese discourse on derivative works of popular literature, I examined some specific examples from Nise monogatari, Furyu Genji monogatari and Nise Murasaki inaka Genji to demonstrate the limits of the use of the term parody considering the social, textual and readerly aspects of the works. |
