| Description | The fourth age – that is, older age associated with disability – represents a specific period of life characterized by a high degree of uncertainty. It is uncertain whether a person will find himself/herself in the fourth age at all, at what exact age he/she will enter it, how long it will last, and what specific form the fourth age will take. Uncertainty is also associated with everyday life and its prospects, and the possible progression of disability. Another distinctive characteristic of the fourth age is its invisibility. People in the fourth age have significantly reduced mobility and rarely leave their homes. Uncertainty combined with invisibility and the need for care creates a fourth age that most feel is better avoided. It is a source of fear that leads to the ‘othering’ of disabled older adults. The book deals with the forms of the fourth age from the perspective of older adults in the fourth age themselves. Based on repeated interviews with people in the fourth age living in their own homes and in residential care as well as observations in homes visited with caregivers, it demonstrates the considerable heterogeneity of the appearance of the fourth age. The focus is on white spots of the fourth age - specifically the possibilities for agency meaningful daytime regimes, and preserving social ties. |
