Description The pandemic spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is still a major global health problem. Antiretroviral therapy has turned HIV infection into a chronic disease that has been developing for decades. Effective treatment has led to a significant decrease in morbidity and mortality due to HIV infection and a reduction in the number of new infections worldwide. However, the lives of people with HIV are absolutely dependent on strict adherence to regular daily treatment regimes. The therapeutic potential of drugs is only inhibitory, not eradication, treatment is not definitive and the pandemic continues. The article presents current goals and possibilities of antiretrovirals in terms of therapy and prevention. The limits of treatment are discussed due to the persistence of latently infected tissue reservoirs and only partial regeneration of immunological functions. The ultimate goal of scientific research is to achieve sustained viral suppression and complete clearance of HIV from the human body. There are mentioned newly developed drugs and their modified forms, some promising intervention strategies including immunotherapy and genetic engineering technologies.
