Description | In the summer of 2011, in one Czech mountain range on a site at an altitude of about 1300 m a.s.l., I collected for me an unknown taxon of grasshopper. The individuals of this taxon showed considerable resemblance to common grasshopper (Pseudochorthippus parallelus), but they were darker and, with some morphological features of the closely related grasshopper (P. montanus). After evaluating all the morphological features, we were inclined to think that it was only a mountain ecotype of common grasshopper. In 2014, F. Chládek described the endemic grasshopper Pseudochorthippus smardai from the Belianske Tatras in Slovakia. Individuals of the type series were collected in the 60s and the reason why the author delayed the description of the taxon for about 50 years, was a strong suspicion that it is only a hybrid between grasshoppers (P. parallelus x montanus). Immediately after getting acquainted with this article, I realized that a very similar taxon (Pseudochorthippus cf. smardai) I have already in the collection, and moreover from the Czech Republic. Based on a recent comparative analysis of morphological features, I have good reason to believe that Pseudochorthippus smardai (SK) and P. cf. smardai (CZ) are conspecific (identical), but this will still have to be confirmed at the molecular level. |
