Description | The article reconstructs and illuminates an event that did not come to the attention of Russian historiography on the background of a major victory for Tsar Ivan IV Vasilyevich near Kazan. Muscovy defeated a long-standing enemy, annexed the territory of the Kazan Khanate. Many annals contain rich material about the battles of the Russian army with the defenders of the city. However, another event is hiding in the shadow of the capture of Kazan, which represents a tragic moment in the history of the Finno-Ugric peoples of the Volga region. Punitive campaigns against Arsk and Arsk lands are directly related to the capture of the Kazan Khanate and the annexation of enormous lands to Russia. For the Udmurts and their historical memory, the fall of Arsk is of key importance. This article shows the differences that are observed in the description of the seizure of Ara land in the sources, and also wants to draw attention to this event, since it left an indelible mark on the history, mentality and historical fate of the Udmurt people. |
