Description Thee Public Defender of Rights was established as an independent institution whose task was to protect citizens‘ rights against misconduct of public authorities. Gradually, the scope of Defender’s competence has grown to the current level. Unlike other countries, the Czech Republic extended the Defender’s competence whenever there was need for an independent institution. As a result, five (out of eight) departments of the Office of the Public Defender of Rights deals (not exclusively) with rights of foreigners. Thus, I decided to focus on how the Defender helps foreigners, especially EU citizens and their family members.
