Description | Patients with acute intoxication represent an important group admitted to the ICU. In general, intoxications can be divided into accidental and intentional. The most important group of intoxications are intentional poisonings with suicidal intent, as well as accidental poisonings with a potentially lethal dose of toxin (eg foodborne intoxication with toadstools). In the following text, we will deal first with the general principles of diagnosis and initial therapy and then with the most clinically important specific cases of poisoning that we encounter in our conditions. For a more detailed study of the issue, see the links throughout this chapter. |
