“Cricket is a religion, and I am an extremist!” : meanings of the sport for the minorities in the Czech Republic

Description | On the meadow far from the center of the town is the cricket playground situated. People from different countries, various races, habits, and religions play or visit cricket events every weekend there. From Saturday to Sunday, from April to the end of August. Some of them have been living in the Czech Republic for over twenty years, some just a few months. They create a community around one cricket club. Based on the observations of cricket events, formal and informal interviews with the club members and their relatives, the conference contribution portrays the meanings of cricket and cricket events for the minorities. Within the analysis of the emic conceptualizations of informants, the conference contribution, for example, clarifies what a statement ‘cricket is a religion’ means and what circumstances and practices the mutual closeness in such a multicultural community form. |
