Description The psychiatric care guidelines for autism treatment of the Psychiatric Society of the Czech Psychiatric Association include interventions based on applied behavior analysis (ABA) (1). Comprehensive behavioral programs can alleviate the core symptoms of autism and thus improve the quality of life of the patient and his/her family (2). The lay public and some professionals view ABA as "one method" of treating autism. However, as Keenan and Dillenburger (3) pointed out, it is a 'category error' that occurs when an object or concept belonging to one category is treated as if it belongs to another (4). In fact, applied behavior analysis is a discipline in its own right, from which a number of programs, methods and techniques have been developed that are of practical use in many areas of human activity, including interventions for ASD. Therefore, applied behavior analysis cannot be categorized as a subset of educational or intervention programs such as the TEACCH program or the Early Start Denver Model. Current applied behavior analysis brings to practice dozens of evidence-based practices for the development of new skills and systematic reduction of problem behaviors in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. The age of the child at the start of the intervention, the overall time commitment, the intensive collaboration and involvement of the child's family, the integrity of the procedures, and the expertise of the staff play a key role in the intervention. However, the availability of professional behavioral analytic services is currently very limited in the Czech Republic and the number of persons indicated for intervention exceeds the capacity of professionals (5). This paper provides basic information about applied behavior analysis as a scientific discipline, the possibilities of using ABA programs in behavioral interventions for children with ASD and focuses specifically on the possibilities of supporting the development of communication - verbal behavior and social skills. A video case study of a child receiving a comprehensive early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) led by a behavior analyst - an allied health professional - will be presented.
