| Description | When viewing works of art in world galleries, we can easily notice that the 17th and 18th centuries offered the viewer a whole range of paintings and graphic sheets with the theme of battles, skirmishes and fighting units. These paintings were created at a time when there was no over-the-counter art, so they had to have a client, someone who required such works to be hung in their rooms as a memorial or wanted to have them as an example of a certain art form among other works of art. A similar topic was dealt with in 1916 by Max Dvořák, who emphasised in the case of Goya's "The Disasters of War" the shift from objectivity and the idealization of war victories to immersing the meditating man in himself. That is why we find here the modern spirit of a new reflection, which seeks the truth within with a desire for a new, better humanity. The lecture tries to develop this thesis in four parts: I. Max Dvořák and his explanation of the changes in the image of war; II. Baroque battle scenes: between history, geometric reality and genre image; III. Jacques Callot and the search for the meaning of his "soldier stories"; IV. The "decorative mode" of battle scenes in Italy: reflection or memento? |
