Description | Miroslav Tyrš (1832–1884) is mainly known to the public as one of the founders of the Sokol Gymnastic Movement, which is closely connected with creating a national identity and the struggle for independence of the Czechoslovak state. During his life, however, Tyrš tried to improve the cultural conditions in Bohemia not only through Sokol activities, which were to cultivate citizens following the example of Greek kalokagathia, but especially through fine arts. In the 1970s, the Czech art scene found itself in a deep crisis, marked by a political and economic decline. In addition, Tyrš, who suffered from depression and many personal crises all his life, decided to fight against this bleak state of society by giving lectures to the public, writing theoretical studies and from 1872 also contributing with art reviews in various periodicals. However, unlike other critics, he intended to anchor his art-critical texts on a scientific basis in order to equal European standards. |
