| Description | There are currently approximately 19 000 convicts in the Czech Republic serving prison sentences. Many of them are parents. According to qualified estimates, there are currently 30-40,000 children in the Czech Republic who have parents in prison. Each year, about one-third of the prison population turns over and incarcerated parents experience additional children. If we wanted to calculate the number of children who have had parents in prison over the last 10 years, the number would be many times higher. Despite the fact that the number of children is not negligible, the issue of children of incarcerated parents and their rights has not yet received sufficient attention in the Czech Republic. This group of children needs specific support and care in order to reduce as much as possible the negative effects of parental imprisonment on their healthy development. Children of imprisoned parents experience extreme stress and strain; according to foreign research, these children are at greater risk of health and psychological problems, behavioural disorders and are more likely to engage in criminal behaviour. Without help, children cannot cope on their own. |
