Description | Brno aesthetics of the 19th century is mainly associated with members of the Augustinian monastery in Old Brno, namely F. M. Klácel and F. T. Bratranek. Neither of them, however, are among the "highlights" of Czech aesthetics, and their reflections on beauty and art are mentioned rather marginally. Nevertheless, it must be said that several currents were combined in their ideas. If we can look at Brno as a place of intersection of various cultural influences, we can see in the thoughts of these authors the influence of Czech Catholicism, the ideas of neo-Hegelianism, but also the typical fluctuation between the inclination towards the German cultural environment (Bratranek's reflections on Goethe's works) on the one hand, and the awareness of Czech national uniqueness (Bratranek's Czech passages in his German Beiträge Zu einer Aesthetik der Pflanzenwelt). The present paper is based on joint research with Hana Řehulková, which seeks to discover whether everything essential has already been said about these representatives of Brno aesthetics (and not only) and whether their work can be more strongly linked to the contemporary aesthetics of the Central European area. |
