Description The topoi of self-sacrifice, the atonement and the heroic death are an integral part of the Germanic worldview and its self-perception. Following the ideas about the culture of the ancient Germanic peoples that have been handed down over the centuries, the völkisch-oriented authors of the late 19th century tried to reconstruct an original Germanic mythology. The topoi mentioned played a central role in her literary attempts. The corresponding scenes were portrayed with pathos and often sadistic. Sadism and expressive detailed descriptions of violence are characteristic of these historical novels. The presentation is a try to answer the following questions: Does this have something to do with the hybrid position of the genre - the historical novel? Or maybe with the integration of the elements of the Kolportag literature of the time? Or are the reasons to be sought rather in the psychological disposition of the authors? This article examines the role and function of the descriptions of violence in the texts of the so-called professorial novels and the folk-oriented literature at the end of the 19th century.
