Description Adults who immigrate with little or no experience of formal education and limited print literacy in their languages of origin can take up to eight times longer than their literate counterparts to develop reading in second language. A lesser-used activity with such learners is pleasure reading. Not only does this independent reading practice produce a range of benefits but with sufficient selection of books, it can also cater to a population of learners that is heterogeneous and can do so in a non-traditional instructional context such as that of a volunteer-led programme. If certain program requirements are met, we observe learners engaging in pleasure reading, some of them doing so for the first time in their lives.
