Description | The study centres on one of the activities of the philosopher, aesthetician, art historian and Sokol official Miroslav Tyrš (1832–1884), namely art criticism, which he was engaged in from 1872 until his death and through which he tried to improve cultural conditions in Bohemia. The article focuses primarily on the pragmatic circumstances of the creation of Tyrš’s texts – it will shed light on how he came to write critical reviews in the first place since up to that time, he had devoted himself almost exclusively to working for Sokol. It will also draw attention to the various social connections through which he obtained offers to write his reviews for various magazines. Furthermore, attention will be paid to the preparation of the texts themselves – how he proceeded in his work, what was characteristic for his reviews and how they differed from, for example, the texts of Jan Neruda. Finally, the authors who took over Tyrš’s leading position in the field of Czech art criticism at the end of the 19th century will be touched upon as well. |
