| Description | This study uses the correspondence between Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol and Pavel Vasilyevich Annenkov and Annenkov’s literary memoirs to document the trajectory of their friendship. Together with Vissarion Belinsky, Gogol was instrumental in prompting Annenkov to start writing. They first met in the 1830s and in the early days, enjoyed a close and warm friendship. This was when Annenkov was nicknamed “Jules Janin” in Gogol’s circle. They remained steadfast friends during the several years that Gogol spent abroad and Annenkov was among those who transcribed the Dead Souls for him in 1841. In the 1840s, as their views and values changed, they became less close and Annenkov was even drawn into the flare-up between Gogol and Belinsky. Nevertheless, their friendship continued beyond this episode and only ended with Gogol’s death in 1851. |
