Description | The paper address the issues related to the problematic localization of a group of early-Christian ivory pyxides in the Caucasus proposed by Wolfgang Fritz Volbach in the second edition of his ivory catalog (1952). The main aim of the contribution is to deconstruct the hypothesis of the German scholar through its historical contextualization and the recurse of the most recent contributions on the topic. Secondly, the paper aims – through the study of portable objects such as ivory pyxides – to demonstrate that Armenia and the Caucasus, far from being marginalized, were actively part of the Late Antique Mediterranean dialogues. |
