Description | The aim of this paper is to research and analyse the portrayal of various illnesses and diseases in the work of Plautus. The work consists of complete analysis of all comedies of Plautus and tries to answer the following research questions: How often the sick character appears in Plautus´ plays? Which illnesses are mentioned the most often? Can the certain known illnesses be identified by the list of symptoms Plautus provides? Is it more common to portray some character archetypes as being sick than the others and if so, why? The secondary aim of this paper is to research what is the reason to include the sick character or to mention the illness and how the mentioned illnesses compare to known diseases of the time or even today. Lastly the paper will also touch on the comedic aspects of the illness. |
