Description | Thromboembolic disease is a complex designation for two nosological units: deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. In the general population, the incidence of TEN is approximately 1-2 cases per 1000 inhabitants/year. The incidence of TEN increases significantly with increasing age. In people over 80 years of age, it is almost eight times higher than in the fifth decade of life. It is estimated that up to 1% of hospitalized patients die from pulmonary embolism. In approximately 10% of autopsied dead, the main cause of death is pulmonary embolism. The diagnosis of TEN is often thought later, when clinical (and often fatal) symptoms of the disease are present. Especially in older patients, it is often diagnosed until post-mortem. |
