Description | The current global change has lead to the proposal for declaration of a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene, due to its extent and impacts. In this chapter, we first briefly outline the reasons and basis of this proposal from the perspective of natural sciences that came with the term. We also introduce the integral approach of the Earth System science to studying global processes that lead to viewing the planet as a complex system. This view had far-reaching consequences, e.g. in the focus on studying tipping points that lead, for instance, to the Planetary boundaries concept. Then we follow the discussions about the start date of the Anthropocene, that can also be viewed as a narrative of the rise of humankind and its impacts on the planet. The central motive of the chapter is then the realization that with the declaration and reflection of the Anthropocene, not only the geological epoch and the view of the planetary processes are changing, but also and maybe foremost, the perspective on humans and their role within the planet. The Anthropocene brings a new image where humans, instead of being an ‘alien’ element, are now a co-creator of nature and the planet. At the same time it sets this image into some kind of a new ‘grand narrative’, called Anthropocene. We discuss several versions of the Anthropocene narrative as they developed when the concept spread to the humanities, social sciences, art or conservation practice. Finally, we discuss the potential of the Anthropocene concept and its reflection to instil a significant scientific paradigm change (as many suggest) or even a change of understanding of the role of humans in the world. |
