Description This article points to the existence of a phenomenon that was once widespread but is now forgotten - many churches, statues, crosses and other sacred buildings or memorials had their own property, often in the form of a monetary endowment, and the assets of this endowment were valorised by lending to local people. Today's so-called material cultural capital was formerly sustained by the proceeds of financial capital; foundations of sacred monuments stood at the beginning of the credit cycle and at its end. Two types of financial capital are particularly important in relation to the maintenance of sacred elements in the landscape: church assets and church foundations on the one hand, and the foundations of individual sacred monuments in the landscape on the other.
