Description Chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is relatively rare in children and affects some 10% children witch contract ITP. Its treatment is very difficult. The authors used for treatment of chronic ITP in a group of 16 children(8 boys and 8 girls) aged 4-18 years and 6.8 months interferon alpha 2a - 3 million u./1 m2 three times per week in 12-15 doses. The therapeutic results are relatively good and the therapeutic response is very good, i.e. an increase of the number of thrombocytes above 100 x 10/2/l after completed treatment was recorded in six children. Six months after terminated interferon treatment a very good therapeutic response was found in three children and a good therapeutic response (thrombocyte level 50.0 x 10/9/l - 100.0 x 10/9/l) in six children. From the therapeutic results it is apparent that possibilities in chronic ITP in children and frequently a rise of thrombocyte numbers is found. Side-effects of treatment were minimal. However, the rise of the thrombocyte level was not always permanent.
