Description | Medieval pilgrimage is today often associated with an almost fanatical religious act. This perspective is partially based on modern prejudices about medieval religion, which is sometimes linked to the notions of irrationality, manipulation, lack of tolerance, and violence. What did a medieval pilgrimage really look like? How should we imagine medieval pilgrims and world around them? And what is the relationship between pilgrimage and art? These are some of the questions this book seeks to answer. It follows the medieval pilgrims on their journey through the landscape to the interior of the church at the pilgrimage destination and reconstructs their first-hand experience of the sacred in which the visual culture, the smell of incense, the light of candles, and the pleasant coolness of the interior played an essential role. |
