| Description | Medieval pilgrims travelling from one sacred place to another were most of the time surrounded by landscapes, whether cultivated or, on the contrary, completely untamed. After a day's march, the silhouette of a church on the horizon or the sound of a bell emanating from it could certainly evoke excitement, anticipation and relief, especially in adverse weather conditions. Indeed, such first encounters with sacred architecture in the distance foreshadowed the fact that pilgrims were approaching a sacred place. There, beyond the sacred itself, rest, food, drink, shelter, and help could await them. This text will focus specifically on the landscape through which medieval pilgrims travelled, and in particular their encounters with sacred architecture in the distance. |
