Description The paper focuses on the concept of religious tolerance in the Austrian monarchy and the specific socio-cultural situation in Moravia and Austrian Silesia in the tolerance period (1781 – 1849) on examples of localities where two or three Christian denominations meet. First of all, the paper defines a new relationship between the state and the church, but also the parisches and local aristocracy, as a result of the transformation of the monarchy into a centralist-absolutist bureaucratic state. Equally important is the explanation of the different status of denominations and the limitations that emerging parishes and congregations had to deal with and which they often violated. Third, the often problematic relationships between denominations appropriately demonstrates a different attitude to the visual arts in the sacred space, depending on the theological views and the liturgy. The arrival of evangelical preachers from Upper Hungary reveals the difficult social situation of churches as well as the problematic functioning of worship life.
