Description | Christ walked up the stairs and down the stairs several times, and then millions of believers across many territories. The cult of Pilate's staircase begins already around 326, when St. Helena was to bring it to Rome. However, the main boom of the Holy Stairs and their devotion came in the Baroque era when their replicas began to be built across central Europe. These chapels were not only places of adoration and prayer, but also places of pilgrimage. While the religious foundation or the number of steps is given, the context in which they were set is different. Therefore, the architectural and artistic appearance of the chapels is also slightly different each time, and this is what my lecture will try to outline along with the context of Baroque piety that inherently belongs to them. The lecture will be devoted to significant Polish and Czech realisations. |
