Description This contribution is focused on the role and activities of defence attorneys (advocates) in the 1950s in Czechoslovakia. The first part of the text is devoted to the features and changes of the legal profession after the February coup in 1948 and especially in the 1950s. The second part of this contribution deals with defence attorneys during legal proceedings, especially political trials, and focuses on their active or passive participation. The conclusion of the article assesses whether the advocate of the 1950s can be viewed as a passive or an active participant in legal proceedings.
