Description | The architecture of the medieval monasteries and churches in what is now Georgia, Armenia and Turkey - be it Jvari, Ateni Sioni, Haghpat, Khtskonkh, Marmashen or the David Garedzi complex - harmoniously permeates the austere landscape of the South Caucasus. Moreover, these monuments often dominate their surroundings. Their silhouettes or the sound of bells emanating from them draw the viewer closer. They make direct contact with them from a considerable distance. This chapter focuses on the relationship between medieval people and the architecture of the South Caucasus. |
