Description | Although Socrates did not leave behind any works in writing, his assiduous philosophical activity in Athens and the circumstances of his death made him a preeminent representative of 'Greek wisdom' and a widely revered figure in later Graeco-Roman philosophical tradition. In my contribution, I survey his reception in the texts of early Christian apologists, focusing on (a) his inner voice (???µ?????) and prophecies; (b) his moral qualities (or lack thereof) and his death; and (c) his profession of ignorance and the unusual practice of Socratic swearing. |
