Description | The chapter summarises the history of the Viennese Geserah, one of the largest Jewish pogroms in medieval Central Europe. The authors mainly discuss the question of whether or to what extent the pogrom was connected with Duke Albert's fight against the Hussites, which is suggested by isolated sources. The authors are of the opinion that the Viennese Geserah was not caused and justified by a supposed cooperation of Jews with Hussites, but was mainly financially motivated. On the one hand, Duke Albert needed the money for his marriage to the king's daughter Elisabeth of Luxembourg, but on the other hand, he needed it to finance the Hussite campaigns - which is a certain connection to the Hussite War. |
