Description | Despite the considerable geographical distance, various linguistic elements have been incorporated into Czech through Russian over the centuries. These include so-called realia, i.e., words that describe specific phenomena of a particular culture or nation. The author briefly outlines the historical development of the relationship between Russian and Czech and introduces the reader to the categories of ethnographic realia that can be found in selected dictionaries and academic publications. Since language is a living and changing entity and the reality of language often differs from the dictionary, the author also analyses the frequency and ways of using Russian realia in Czech since 1998. The analysis is based on the author's own research on russicisms and on data from the Czech National Corpus. |
