Description | At the end of the eighteenth century, several dozen fourth-century wrought-iron objects were discovered in the vicinity of the Roman monastery of San Francesco di Paola, which went down in history as the "Esquiline Treasure". Among them was a silver dressing case with scenes of a pagan deity, portraits of the commissioners with the inscription "Secundus and Projecta live in Christ". How did religious tolerance manifest itself in visual culture, and did the conversion to the Christian faith represent a radical change in taste? Why did ordained virgins start a sexual revolution, and how was matrimonial property law treated in late antique Rome? Art historian Ivan Foletti and archaeologist Jiří Macháček answer in the fifth episode of the podcast "The Middle Ages (Differently) Last". |
