Description | In the spring of 2021, archaeologists from Archaia Brno witnessed a revolutionary find. Under the floor of the current Baroque church in fortress of St. Hippolyte near Znojmo, the core of which has been newly dated to the mid-13th century, the remains of two older buildings were found, which were probably built here within a relatively short period of two centuries. In both cases, they were churches with extremely interesting layouts: central plan and vaulting. The oldest, a rotunda with a diameter of thirteen metres, is unparalleled in size in Great Moravia. How long and thorny is the archaeologist's journey from assumption to discovery and from discovery to interpretation? Do the churches in fortress refer to the architecture of the Adriatic coast, or could they be part of a much wider phenomenon that can be traced back to the Holy Sepulchre? The pitfalls and charms of contemporary archaeology are discussed by archaeologist Jiří Macháček and art historian Ivan Foletti in the next installment of the podcast The Middle Ages (Otherwise) Endure. |
