Description | The symbolism of the vine, laurel and olive branch has a long tradition in visual culture and carries a multitude of different meanings associated with various iconographic themes across the centuries. The talk focused on a narrower range of scenes, based on the text of Ovid's Metamorphoses, which described the transformation into vine, laurel and olive, i.e. the stories of Bacchus and Erigone, Apollo and Daphne, and the transformation of the Apulian shepherd. These three examples provide, in addition to the basic narrative line, a number of other levels of meaning that have been developed and given attention in the visual arts. |
