Description | During the conflict between the Trojans and the Achaeans, the son of goddess Dawn, Memnon, came to the aid of the besieged city. His fight against Achilles and subsequent death in the war is the most famous episode related to him. However, my main point of interest was not the classic duel between the heroes. A more intriguing question is where this Memnon came from and who sent him to Troy. He was the leader of Aethiopians, and his homeland was located either in Africa or Asia. His campaign to Troy resulted from his family ties to Priam, although several sources suggest a different reason. In this presentation, I explored the ancient sources, compared the mentions of Memnon’s origins, and what role the Assyrians played in the war. |
