Description | Focal infection is a theory that assumes the development of disease by the action of microorganisms from a distant, usually hidden, site. Inflammatory diseases in the oral cavity have been identified as sources of focal infection since the early days in the forefront. In the last 100 years, this theory has gone through stages of uncritical acceptance and practical oblivion. As a consequence, the perception of the risk of inflammatory deposits in the oral cavity is highly inconsistent, both by dentists and by physicians from different specialties of general medicine. In order to unify this approach and facilitate communication across different medical disciplines, an interdisciplinary working group was established under the auspices of the CSC. As a result of its work, oral and systemic pathologies and various invasive therapeutic procedures have been categorized into three levels according to their risk. This information is summarised in the form of tables and 'traffic lights', which provide indicative recommendations for further action based on the combination of odontogenic and systemic risk. All this is clearly published on the website www.fokusy.cz, it is not a denitive output, information obtained from other professional societies will be added gradually. |
