Description | This paper focuses on error analysis in Catalan as a foreign language with Czech learners. The aim is to investigate what difficulties these learners have when using the article in writing, in order to classify their errors and to find out the most problematic contexts of use regarding syntax and semantics. To this end, firstly, the paper presents a theoretical framework to review the linguistic trends that have investigated errors in foreign language learning, as well as the main psycholinguistic strategies that are part of the interlanguage. Secondly, it shows the classification of the main errors detected in 64 writing samples of students of the Bachelor’s Degree in Catalan Language and Literature at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, during the academic years 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. Thirdly, it offers the results of the analysis. According to the data, Czech learners show more difficulties with the use of the definite article, as opposed to the indefinite, and the psycholinguistic strategies most recognized in their errors are omission, addition and false selection. Regarding the most problematic contexts, the most frequent errors are related to the anaphoric use of the article, to direct the speaker’s attention to what has already appeared earlier in the discourse, and to the deictic use, to introduce new references that have not been mentioned before, because they are based on the extra-linguistic situation. Finally, the paper discusses the potential usefulness of the analysis of these errors, especially when teaching the article in Catalan as a foreign language. |
