Description | What, then, is the essential difference in the perception of the dead in contemporary culture and that of our ancestors? The cult of contact relics and fragments of dead bodies was a public cult in the Middle Ages, unlike today, and played a key role in the formation of social identity. A fundamental difference, then, is our relationship to death today. In recent decades, dying has gradually ceased to be an integral part of life in Western society. As a result, everything to do with death has been marginalized. What we often fail to realise is that we still venerate the 'contact relics' of dead celebrities today. Why else would anyone be willing to pay CZK 4.2 million for a John Lennon watch? |
