Description | The second, expanded edition of Women at the Altar?, this time with the subtitle Mother of God and Gender in Early Christianity, is a contribution to the discussion on the role of women (not only) in the Church. Ordination today is an exclusively male affair, which excludes women from the church hierarchy. But what about in the past? This new edition features an extensive introduction that provides parallels not only from within the Catholic Church but also shows how stereotypes influence the thinking of the common man and political leaders. The book is therefore not only aimed at specialists in art history or church history, but also at the wider public, for whom the issue of gender equality is increasingly topical. The book was produced with the support of energeia o.p.s. as part of the project Medieval JinaX in Contexts, which brings together the activities of the Centre for Early Medieval Studies and the Contexts of Humanity project. The joint project aims to create a platform for sharing critical reflection on the past and the present. |
