Description | The Sermons are now identified as the essential sources for various aspects of medieval history. Anne Thayer asserts, that sermons were woven into the fabric of medieval culture and thus their study is inherently interdisciplinary. While sermons have been traditionally mined for the history of theology, the study of rhetoric, and glimpses into historical life, recent scholarship has expanded into the studies of performance, art, audience, women, devotional practice, spirituality, and other topics (THAYER, 2014). What different roles might the preacher have played in the production of the medieval Latin biography? A comparative analysis of selected sermons of Pope Innocent III with the work Gesta Inocentii III, we will shed light on how this genre of medieval religious spirituality shaped the literary production of the author of the 13th-century papal biography. |
