Description | The article analyses the topic of the city in the novel Enseada amena (1966) by Augusto Abelaira (1926-2003). From a theoretical and methodological point of view, the analysis is essentially based on the concepts of stratigraphic space (Westphal, 2011) and psychogeography (Coverley, 2018). Within this scope, the article focuses, in particular, on the image of the dead city which, supported by the dialogue with Portuguese literature, is presented in Abelaira's novel as a consequence of cataclysms (physical and symbolic) and as an expression of blockage (personal and collective). At the end, a brief comparison of Enseada amena with the short story "Teatro" (Quatro paredes nuas, 1972), conveyed by the coincident female figure, allows to outline a compensatory metaphor capable of redeeming in part the ruins of Abelaira's places through the principle of (re)invention and (re)construction. |
