Description | Every other year, a summer course focusing on literary translation takes place as part of the DCC (Dutch Language, Literature and Culture in a Central European Context) cooperation. Advanced bachelor and master students whose mother tongue is Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Serbian and Croatian participate in this summer course. The students are supervised by translation teachers. The participants translate in advance a number of specified texts, one of which was common to each language combination in the last two editions. During the intensive workshops, these texts are dealt with under the guidance of the teacher. During the last edition (2022) - at least within the Czechoslovak group - the number of texts translated using a translation machine increased. In this lecture, I would like to share my teacher experience. First, I would like to raise what the typical translation problems of this language group are. I would like to show this through concrete examples that I have collected during the past three editions. Secondly, I would like to discuss examples of translation solutions created with the help of translation machines. The aim of this lecture is, on the one hand, to discuss the translation problems of this language group in general the question of how we should deal with this as translation teachers. |
