Description This paper presents the word order analysis of the pre- sent tense forms of the Old Czech verb býti (‘to be’), also known as the preterite auxiliary, in Žaltář wittenberský (Wittenberg Psalter). The results reveal that there is a variation in the preterite auxiliary’s position within the clause; particularly, the auxiliary frequents in the second position in the clause, similar to Contemporary Czech. However, in a significant amount of cases, it also appears further in the clause, mostly following the past participle. The variation is attributed to several factors identified here, namely the influence of the Latin source text, as well as the length of the initial phrase (prosodic effect).
