Description | The Anabaptists' existence in the early modern Bohemian and Moravian royal cities was limited, but it remained an important part of the Anabaptist activity in the Czech lands. It contributes to the understanding of the character of Anabaptism and to the identification of the contacts of the Anabaptists with other members of society. In spite of the anti-Anabaptist mandates, the Anabaptists were present (to a limited extent) within the walls of the royal cities for the whole period of their Moravian existence. The circumstances under which this occurred can be divided into two levels: a) the persecution level (detention, imprisonment, interrogation, execution); the socio-economic level (diets, courts, trade, services). In most cases, the presence of the Anabaptists in the royal cities was temporal and linked to the specific reason for their stay in the city. The existence of a permanent community can be assumed only in Znojmo. |
