Description | This presentation aims to introduce the importance and role of apologies and expressions of regret in the restorative justice system. Restorative justice aims at repairing social relations that have been distorted as a result of crime. Thus, it addresses not only the public interest, but also, in particular, the individual level of crime at the offender-victim-community line. That is why, even in view of the irreplaceable and non-interchangeable nature of an apology, remorse for the act committed or the harm caused is often the key means by which the repair of relationships can be achieved. However, both apology and regret have different forms and meanings across the course of dealing with crime, and this needs to be reflected and worked with from the position of the 'resolver'. The focus will be on what their meaning is for both victim and offender and how the law should respond to them. |
