Description | The form of traditional clothing, especially of the rural population in the Czech lands, changed under the influence of many factors, innovations occurred as a result of the availability of new industrially produced fabrics and haberdashery accessories. Notable inspiration was the fashion trends adopted from urban clothing. The end of the 19th century, with its increased interest in folk culture, had an impact on the unique variations of the traditional ensemble, often with no connection to the regional type. The costume became a program symbol of national or regional identity. However, after 1990, the restoration of the costume in locations where it completely disappeared and its original appearance is not even documented became a completely new phenomenon. These activities are again a manifestation of the need for residents to identify with their environment, and moreover, they are often supported by political positions. The tendency can be demonstrated by several examples of the renewal of costumes in the city districts of Brno, which have a completely different history. And in this context, the question arises for ethnologists, to what extent these phenomena should be perceived as evidence of innovation. |
