Description | The study, based on materials preserved in the Archive of the National Gallery in Prague, brings new insights into the planned and ultimately unrealized auction of a total of 171 paintings discarded from the Picture gallery of the Society of Patriotic Friends of Art and the circumstances that led to their purchase by the bookseller and art dealer Wenzel Dimmer in 1858. It attempts to reconstruct and evaluate the composition of the set of sold paintings, to determine the ensuing fate of the individual works, as well as their previous and subsequent owners, and last but not least to chart the so far more or less unique locations where some of the works are stored today. In addition, it also presents a summary of the available information about the life and activities of Wenzel Dimmer, who in his day ranked among the prestigious figures of Prague social and cultural life. |
