| Description | “The seventies were the most terrible years of the post-war period for literature!” With these words in 2009, the renowned Czechoslovakian translator from German literature Ludvík Kundera described the situation in Czechoslovakia in the seventies. He pointed to the censorship measures that were introduced after the Warsaw Pact troops invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968, and not just in translation literature. Although literary activity was severely hindered by these measures, mechanisms were soon developed that made it possible to weaken the fatal effects of censorship and circumvent the strict regulations. The following article deals with these “negotiation processes” (Smith & Wilson 2011) and attempts to show which strategies the respective actors (publishers, translators, critics, etc.) were able to use to carry out their activities in a literary business defined by censorship. |
