Description | BraveMind: Using Virtual Reality Technology for Purpose The dynamic development of technologies for virtual reality (VR) offers considerable potential in a number of areas, including psychotherapy and innovative ways of psychotherapeutic care. VR exposure therapy (Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy; VRET), which is considered a promising direction of research and development within traditional cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for phobias, is becoming a specific area. Here, VR offers a safe space for authentic, yet controlled and moderated experiences induced by exposure to a phobic stimulus, which have the potential to support a psychotherapeutic process based on the principle of desensitization. An important feature of this solution is also the possible connection of the exposure with the client's physiological measurement, which can provide the psychotherapist with objective feedback about the client's physical state during the exposure in real time. The VR application within CBT offers a highly scalable, affordable and effective tool that has the potential to save psychotherapists time preparing phobic stimuli, deepen the possibilities of home preparation of the client and overall make the course of therapy more efficient. In this contribution, the basic properties of VR technologies in the context of CBT will be discussed, the research framework and the specific technical solution of the BraveMind application, which responds to the above-discussed challenges in the field of VR, will be presented. |
